His refusal to consider a plea bargain in his Florida capital murder trial that could have saved his life, for example, along with his decision to represent himself in that trial can be read as a desire to take centre stage in a drama in which he was the undisputed star. After his conviction, Bundy became even more conscious of his celebrity status, reportedly boasting to psychologist Dorothy Otnow Lewis, “Do you realise I am the most celebrated inmate on death row?”
